The weather has been great and PE classes have mostly been outside recently.  We have had some choice days that included cricketball, soccer, and the mileage club.

Saint Philip Neri recently hosted the US Youth Cricket association President Jamie Harrison.  He taught us cricket and donated equipment.  To check it out follow the link which includes a youtube clip of us playing. http://mdyouthcricket.org/tag/usyca-schools-program/

I am curious to see how many people I am reaching with this website.  If you can please email me at tbateman@st.philip-neri.org with Weebly in the subject line. Thanks, Mr.Bateman

Grades 3-8: This week in PE we worked on getting clear of a defender with a game of sharks and minnows.  Students then partnered up and practiced catching the football while on the run.  The passers reinforced leading with the pass.  Next we split up into 4 teams and played 2 games of football.

GradesPK-2:  We used the hula hoops this week.  Students warmed up doing any of the hula hoop activities from last class and we introduced a few new ones.  Next we played a game “locomotor hello” where students practiced locomotor skills and socialized with their classmates.

Grades 3-8 We started our football unit today.  Students are continuing to use self talk to master new skills.  We focused on getting away from a defender with the self talk of “plant, razor, run”.  This is plant your foot, cut like a razor and then accelerate away from the defender.  The thrower used the self talk of “pass is front” to help lead the receiver with the ball.

Grades PK-2 We did our second throwing and catching lesson today.  Students explored all the ways we have thrown and caught in the past lesson as a warm up.  Then students threw to the wall and caught the ball.  Later we threw to a partner in a variety of ways.

Grades 3 through 8- The rain brought us back inside and our lesson this week combined team handball and football.  We started off class warming up passing with our teammates and then played a game of team handball.  Next we came back to our gym spots and explained self talk.  Self talk is using teaching cues in your head to help you learn a new skill.  Our cues for throwing the football were, look at the target, elbows up, and twist.  We then practiced throwing and catching a football with our partner, using self talk.  We came back to our gym spots and evaluated our use of self talk.  We finished class with another game of team handball.  This time we replaced the playground ball with a football.

Grades PK through 2 – In this lesson the students get to use the rock climbing wall for the first time this year!  Students rotate through 4 stations in the gym.  The stations are scarves, jump ropes, playground balls and the climbing wall.  We have used scarves, jump ropes, and playground balls in other lessons.  When the students are at those stations they can practice any of the skills that we have done with those items.   At the climbing wall the students traverse across the wall and return to the starting point by crossing a balance beam.

Grades 3-8 Today we were able to get back to our soccer unit.  In soccer lesson 3 we warmed up passing and trapping the ball.  We practiced out throw ins and then played some one on one soccer shootout.  After this we described how to put the ball back into play; corner kick, goal kick, free kick, and throw in.  Then we played in a game where we got a chance to practice those skills.

Grades PK-2 Today we switched from jump ropes to throwing and catching.  Each student got their own 6 inch playground ball so that they could have the maximum amount of time to practice skills.  We did skills like; bounce and catch, throw it up and catch with no bounce, throw the ball with one hand and catch with two, throw the ball form one hand and catch in the other, see how many times you can catch in a row, throw then clap then catch, throw spin around and catch.  After the throwing and catching activities we talked about boundaries and how to stay inside of them.  Then we played a tag game inside of the boundaries.

If you are looking for a ball for you child to use to practice a 6 inch playground ball works great.  You can use it for all types of activities; it is lightweight and is a good size for catching.  I use this ball for lots of activities PK through 8.  It is one of my favorite pieces of equipment.

Grades 3-8  This week in PE I introded students to the morining fitness station.  Students then rotated through each station.  The stations include; jump rope, Beckham's cone drill, weights, push-ups/sit-ups, individaul ball handlling skills, pull ups, running/walking, and rock climbing.  For more info see the fitness station page.

Grades 1-2  Students reviewed throwing and catching with the scarves.  We did two relay races and then introcuded jump rope activities.

Grades PK-K  Students reviewed spatial awarness and locomotor skills and performed jump rope activities.

Grades 3-8 Last week the rain kept us inside so we swithched form our soccer unit to a team handball lesson.  We also practiced individual ball handeling skills and tricks.  This week the weather was great and we continued soccer.  We reivewed passing and trapping with the inside of the foot and also added passing and trapping with the outside of the foot.  Then we filled out our recess mileage club cards and moved around the course while dribbling and passing a soccer ball.

Grades 1-2  This week the students were introduced to the recess mileage club.  (See Recess page for more info)

Grades PK-2 We reviewed throwing and catching activities with scarves and introduced jump ropes.  Currently we have jumped over our jump ropes on the ground and also made them into shapes that we have jumped into and out of.

Grades 3-8

9/9/2011 Students are starting off the year with soccer.  The first lesson introduces them to their team and we practiced passing and trapping skills.  The rain kept us inside for our second lesson where we worked on idividual ball handeling skills before playing team handball.

Grades Pre K-2

9/9/2011 In our first lesson we created imaginary bubbles around ourselves.  We used this imagery to help us stay in self space as we explored the gym.  We used different locomotor skills like skipping, golloping, sliding and hopping.
